• The dark tannin-stained waters of the Mayakka River meander peacefully through strands of palmettos, marshy flood plains and pine hammocks. In the rainy season the river overflows its banks to create vast areas of wetlands teeming with wildlife and fish while depositing vital nutrients that enrich the surrounding soils. Naturally flowing rivers such as this provide habitat for a wide variety of animals and the wetlands they produce act as a filtering system which helps to purify runoff before it reaches our Gulf. Preservation of these natural areas is vital and the impact of their destruction has dire consequences that stretch far beyond our local ecosystem. A close inspection of this large composite panorama image reveals a Little Blue Heron hunting fish along the shore and a small alligator tucked amongst fallen timber.
