THE WEEKLY CHALLENGER – ACT EDUCATING THE YOUTH

ST. PETERSBURG – The crowds doubled this year at the Art Conservatory for Teens (ACT) fundraising breakfast. With a mission of educating, empowering, and enriching the lives of youth and teens through arts education, it’s no wonder so many people showed up to Morean Center for Clay on May 4.

Tutoring and Mentorship: In an effort to ensure that no students are left to the margins of society, the ACT is committed to providing academic tutoring and mentorship before and after school. Given the poor postsecondary trajectories of underprivileged youth and the barriers they encounter within their immediate contexts, mentoring has emerged as a mechanism for addressing barriers. The prominence of and need for mentoring has increased as opportunities for authentic interactions with adults in out-of-school activities such as sports, the arts, theatre, and various clubs have decreased (Ashtiani & Feliciano, 2018; Raposa et al., 2018).
